What are the best haircuts for thick hair?

If you’ve got thick hair, remember that most people envy your natural volume. Still, you probably know that it’s tough to manage and can give you a bulky shape that doesn’t always look right.

That’s why the best haircuts for thick hair work with your natural density instead of fighting it.

Keep in mind: Thick hair comes in a range of textures.

From straight to wavy to curly, each kind of thick hair comes with its own challenges. Consider the texture and how it will complement a cut before selecting your new look.

I have five cuts that look good on any man with thick hair, so let’s walk through them.

1. A classic taper is going to keep volume under control and is not going out of style pretty much ever.

The classic taper blends shorter sides into a longer top. It’s a more subtle version of the fade, removing a significant amount of bulk from the sides of your head without being too bold.

You’ll have a clean, timeless style that keeps your natural volume on top. Add a side part for a classic finish.

2. An undercut tames really thick hair and makes a statement, so it’s great for young guys.

I just said the taper is a subtle version of the fade. If you want to take it in the opposite direction, try an undercut (which is a bit different than a fade, technically).

The undercut shaves the sides very short, for a bigger contrast with the top. If you find that your thick hair creates too much width, giving you a mushroom-like look, this is the cut for you.

3. All the actors are wearing textured crops because they’re trying to look like they got out of bed looking that good—no joke, it’s a good cut.

A textured crop is similar to the classic taper, characterized by short sides and back, and longer hair on top. The difference here is that the top is textured, meaning it is layered and choppy. It’s ideal for thick hair, especially if it’s on the curlier side, because the layers help your hair fall naturally without looking heavy.

4. A quiff has to be cut right and maintained right, but it may be my favorite to cut out of all five.

Thick hair makes it easy to build height with a quiff, a cut that lifts your hair up and back to give you a tall, structured top.

A quiff is not the lowest-maintenance style on this list, and it will benefit from a little bit of product like pomade. But if you want to stand out, the quiff might be for you. And it turns your hair’s natural volume into an advantage.

5. It’s too hot for that mop head. Get a crew cut.

I’m just kidding around. A crew cut is a good choice if you feel that way, if you understand me. I know I said not to fight your thick hair, but if you really don’t want to deal with it, sometimes the best move is to just cut it short.

A crew cut trims your thick hair down to a manageable length. Like some others on this list, it’s shorter on the sides and back than on the top. It’s easy to style, doesn’t require upkeep during the day, and works with all textures.

Repeat after me: Thick hair is good. Treasure it.

The key is to choose a haircut that complements your thickness and texture and take care of that head of hair, kids. Oh, and you’ll also want a barber who knows what they’re doing because that hair is too stupendous to be stubble.
