Barber’s Advice: Valentine’s Day Haircuts for Men

There are two choices you need to make when getting a Valentine’s Day haircut: what day to get it and, of course, what look to choose.

The stakes are high. You want to look good. We get it. So today, we’re breaking down when to book your appointment and which styles tend to work on Valentine’s Day.

Schedule a Valentine’s Day haircut now if you want it on Feb. 14th.

Let’s get this out of the way upfront: If you’ve got a date lined up, don’t wait until Valentine’s Day to schedule a cut. Can you get a haircut that morning? Sure.

A lot of people believe the best time to get a cut is February 14th — the day itself. It depends on the cut, the person, and the culture, really.

How fresh do you want your cut to look? It’s about style and culture.

So, if you get a cut on Feb. 14, your lady may hear this: “I got a cut today, and that shows I care for you, respect you, got my life together, and I’m taking this day seriously.”

In another culture, the same lady may look up and hear, “I usually don’t have my life in order, and I’m desperate, so I got a fresh haircut to look like someone I’m not.”

I’m going to have to use silly stereotypes to make my point, but the fact is worth making because I don’t want people, men or women, to be let down on Valentine’s Day.

Say you’re a latino dude who wears a high, tight fade with a really close cut and precise and striking edge-ups from front to back; it makes sense to get a cut on the day itself. Everybody knows you’re trying to look as good as possible. It’s not desperate or anything.

Say you’re a white dude, and you’re into hiking, art, and stuff like that. You like a low skin fade on the side and long hair on the top. A little stubble, maybe. You may want to wait a day. Let that long hair get a little time on it. You don’t want to try too hard. So, I’d get you looking like you don’t care when you actually do.

Everyone has their own culture and quirks. That stuff crosses all boundaries. But you all know what I’m talking about. Don’t overthink it.

A Valentine’s Day haircut needs time to settle.

Whether you get a cut the day of or a day before,  you need to give your hair a little bit of time to “settle in” so your cut will look more natural. Just don’t try to make any changes after you leave the shop.

What if you fall in a pool? If you take a shower and can’t get the texture back, either call to see if you can get a quick booking or don’t worry about it.

For at-home fixes, see my article on the top three hair products and buy all of them.

The bigger the change, the longer you need to wait.

Something else to keep in mind: If you’re planning on a more dramatic change, like going from long hair to a super short buzz, give your hair a week or so to settle. You don’t want any surprises when Valentine’s Day arrives.

Consider one of these five Valentine’s Day haircuts.

  • Classic fade
  • Side part
  • Undercut
  • Crew cut
  • High fade

The most important thing is to pick a style that you feel comfortable with, but if you’re looking for ideas, here are five tried-and-true Valentine’s Day options.

Choose a classic fade for a timeless look.

A good rule of thumb for a Valentine’s Day haircut is to choose a cut that’s simple and classic — the traditional fade is both. The hair tapers on the sides and back, blending into a longer top. It’s a clean, polished look.

Stay neat with a side part.

A side part is clean, structured, and easy to maintain. It works well for most hair types, so you’ll look sharp without much effort.

Pick an undercut for a bold, confident style.

The undercut features short or shaved sides and a longer, styled top. It’s modern and a bit bolder if you’re hoping to make a bigger statement.

Try a crew cut for low-maintenance cool.

The crew cut is short and consistent, with slightly more length on top than the sides. It’s a low-maintenance classic.

Go for a slightly higher high fade.

A high fade features a sharp taper that starts higher on the sides and back and blends into longer hair on top. It’s a striking cut that pairs well with various styles, such as a pompadour or textured crop.
