Here’s how to keep your hair healthy after a haircut: keep things simple. There’s a lot of misinformation out there about different tools and techniques, but in my experience, a consistent and simple care routine is all you need, and it doesn’t have to be expensive.
Here are my four tips:
- Establish a regular washing routine.
- Limit excessive heat from blow dryers
- Keep yourself and your hair hydrated.
- Use quality hair care products.
Healthy hair makes for better cuts.
Keeping your hair in good condition post-cut helps prevent common issues such as split ends and breakage. It also ensures your style remains sharp until you’re ready for your next trip to the barber.
Now, let’s go through those four techniques one by one for keeping hair healthy after a haircut.
1. Stop washing your hair every day.
Many men wash their hair every day, but that’s not necessary. Instead, aim to wash your hair every two or three days (and if you have a dry scalp or curly hair, you can wash even less than that). Avoid over-washing, as it can strip away natural oils.
Use a gentle shampoo with lukewarm water. To prevent damage, scrub your scalp instead of your hair. Finally, go easy on your hair. Massaging too hard can cause breakage.
2. Avoid excessive heat from blow dryers.
While it can be tempting to reach for the blow dryer if you’re in a hurry, the excessive heat from one can damage your hair. Minimize heat exposure and opt for air-drying whenever possible.
If you use a blow dryer, remember that less is more.
3. Add hydrating conditioners. Drink more water.
Men’s hair tends to be thicker and coarser, making hydration essential. Your number one hair hydrator should be your conditioner: Condition your hair every time you wash it with shampoo. If dry hair is still an issue, add leave-in conditioners or oil products to keep it hydrated and manageable.
Also, drink water. Studies show that people who consistently drink at least two liters of water daily experience more hair growth and overall hair health.
4. Use quality hair care products (without breaking the bank).
Quality doesn’t mean expensive. Invest in products specifically designed for your type of hair. You should also look for products that are free from harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and silicons, which tend to dry out your hair and irritate your scalp.
