Pro tip: Beard maintenance doesn’t need to break your wallet.

A well-groomed beard takes effort, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can stay looking sharp with simple beard maintenance tips that won’t cost you a week’s paycheck.

It’s pretty easy to start, just follow these two simple rules:

  1. Invest in a handful of quality products that do everything you need.
  2. Follow proper beard care habits.

Let’s talk about the specific beard maintenance products you should look for and how to get a beard care routine started.

#1. You don’t need expensive tools.

For your once-a-week trim, which is all you need to maintain your beard’s shape and encourage healthy growth, you don’t need a ton of costly equipment.

There are three basic tools you need:

  • A trimmer
  • Scissors
  • A beard brush or comb

Get those three, and you have covered all the essential beard grooming tasks. Everything else is just unnecessary for most people, including fancy gadgets like beard shapers and whisker dams. It’s better to invest in a smaller range of quality tools.

Choose good tools over cheap alternatives.

Avoid the cheapest beard trimmers, scissors, and other similar products.

Reliable trimmers, such as the Philips Norelco Multigroom or Wahl Aqua Blade, may cost a bit more upfront, but they last longer and provide a better trim, ultimately saving you money in the long run.

#2. Good habits are the building blocks of proper beard maintenance.

The proper routine can improve your beard’s health and look and save you money in the process.

You don’t need a ton of product.

If you feel like you’re going through beard shampoo too quickly, you probably are. You don’t need to shampoo your beard every day; two or three times a week is ideal for most guys.

Some regular hair shampoos can work on your beard.

At The Classic, we typically recommend investing in a beard-specific shampoo since they’re less harsh and don’t wash away the beard’s natural oils. But some standard shampoos offer the same benefits, if you’re looking to save money.

Look for a sulfate-free shampoo. It should be mild enough to use on your beard.

Regular brushing is better than a bunch of expensive oils.

Your body naturally produces an oil called “sebum.” Yeah, it doesn’t sound too good, but it’s actually super good for you. Sebum naturally moisturizes your skin and hair. Combing or brushing your beard helps distribute this magical oil and keeps beards healthy.

That said, you can use beard oil. Just be smart about it.

If you do want to invest in beard oil, be sure to apply it after washing your beard, not before. You also don’t need to use a lot. A little beard oil goes a long way.

A balanced diet also helps.

Believe it or not, what you eat can impact the health of your beard. Foods rich in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids support hair growth and can prevent thinning. Vitamins A, C, and E are beneficial, too: They reduce dryness and moisturize the skin under your beard.
