The truth is, there isn’t one kind of taper fade that works for everyone. It all comes down to how much contrast you want and how you like to wear your hair on top.
The taper fade comes in three basic lengths.
Today we’re looking at the three kinds of taper fades — low, mid, and high. The goal here is to break down the features of each so you can tell your barber exactly what you want during your next cut.
Taper fades blend the hairline into the neck and sides.
With the taper fade, the hair is longer on the top of the head and gets shorter as it moves down to the sides and back.
It’s a variety of both the taper and fade, kind of a midpoint between the two. It gives you the gradual shortening of a taper and the contrast of a fade.
Low, mid, and high tell you where the fade starts.
On a taper fade, the hair will always end up short. The “height” (low, mid, or high) lets your barber know how high up on the sides and back you want your hair to start blending.
A low taper fade keeps it clean.
The low taper fade starts right above the ears and fades down the neckline. It’s the perfect cut for those who want a taper fade that’s sharp but also a bit more conventional and work-appropriate.
If you’re aiming to pair a taper with a classic side part or slicked-back look, go with the low taper fade. One more perk: It won’t grow out too noticeably.
A mid taper fade offers balance.
The mid taper starts around temple level. It also gives you more contrast than the low fade.
Choose the mid taper fade if you like medium-length styles on top, like a textured crop or a messy, brushed forward fringe. This one works particularly well if you have thick or wavy hair.
A high taper fade is bold.
Last is the high taper fade, which jumps above the temple, giving you the most dramatic contrast between the sides and top.
The high taper fade is a great choice if you wear a high-volume style like an afro or pompadour. If you like more dramatic edges, go with a high taper.
All three taper fades can look great.
Your choice should depend on how much contrast you want and how you like your hair styled.
If you want more length around the sides and a natural look, go with the low taper fade. If you want to emphasize height and short sides, choose the high taper fade. And if you’re looking for a balance between the two, check out the mid taper fade.
