What are the best men’s winter haircuts to try? Think about this: It might be time to go longer and get some protection from the cold weather.
Okay, our two barbershops are in Fort Worth, Texas, where it’s not exactly below zero most days, even in January. Still, winter is the prime season to let your hair grow out a bit.
Extra length on top keeps you warm and gives you more to work with when styling.
If you don’t go longer now, you realistically won’t want to again until next winter. S o if you’ve been thinking at all about growing out your hair and trying something like a textured crop, late fall and winter are the best times to start.
2026 is all about texture and natural movement.
That’s why the five cuts we’re recommending are:
- Tapered mid-length crop
- Low fade with longer texture
- Modern medium slick-back
- French crop
- Messy fringe
Let’s look at the cuts that will pop this winter.
When you sit down in the barber chair this season, remember that these are the styles that are hot in 2026, delivering texture and length without too much maintenance:
1. Tapered mid-length crop
If you want to keep some substance on top without dealing with unruly hair every morning, a mid-length crop with a clean taper is about as reliable as it gets.
You’re leaving two or three inches of textured length on top, so you get natural volume that holds its shape. The low taper also keeps the edges sharp while leaving enough density on the sides to frame your face.
2. Low fade with longer texture
We like a low fade in the fall and winter. Remember, with a low fade, the upper sides retain more length.
Then you can pair that extra material on the sides and neck with a textured top. The uneven, choppy look gives you extra volume and movement on top. It also works whether your hair is curly, wavy, or straight.
3. Modern medium slick-back
A medium-length slick-back gives you a more refined look, sort of the opposite of a textured, messy top. Here, the hair is swept back following its natural growth direction. Traditionally, the slick-back is tightly combed back to the scalp, but the modern variation is a bit more loose.
Ask your barber to taper the neckline and sideburns to keep the style looking intentional rather than overgrown. Finally, we recommend you style it with a light-hold cream rather than a stiff pomade.
4. French crop
This one gives you a textured top with a blunt fringe that’s styled forward so that it sits across the forehead. The fringe is really the focal point here, adding structure to the cut and drawing attention to the eyes.
The French crop works best with guys who have somewhat wavy hair to give the top some dimension.
5. Messy fringe
With a messy fringe, longer layers on top fall forward into a tousled fringe. Despite the name, the cut isn’t a complete mess: The sides stay short and tapered.
But it is a fairly effortless look. The hair falls naturally, so you don’t have to do much styling other than run your fingers through it occasionally.
Switch your products to prevent hat hair.
Hat hair is an enemy year-round, but it’s an even bigger problem in the winter, when the beanie makes its appearance. Heavy hats flatten your hair’s volume and ruin styling products.
Fortunately, it can be stopped with the right products. Stay away from heavy pomades or gels that dry hard. Instead, use something like a lightweight leave-in conditioner or hair oil, which will allow you to reshape your hair with your fingers when you take your hat off.
Combat winter dryness.
Cold air outside strips the moisture from your hair and scalp, leading to dry, brittle texture, itchiness, and flake buildup.
You’ve got two ways to prevent those annoying issues:
1. Wash less, condition more.
You don’t need to wash your hair every day when it’s cold. Cut back on shampooing to, say, two or three times a week so you don’t strip your scalp’s natural oils. But absolutely make sure you condition every time you do wash.
2. Don’t skip scalp care.
A dry scalp isn’t always dandruff. Most of the time in winter, it’s just dehydration. Try massaging oil or a hydrating scalp treatment into your scalp to keep your hair healthy.
