Shaved hair designs, also called haircut line art or hair tattoos, are a fun, bold way to express your look. They’re not for everyone, but they can be a tasteful way to make a statement.
Think of it this way: A lot of guys will get a high fade. Fewer will get a high fade with an angular or swirling pattern shaved into the side.
Not sure what kind of shaved hair design you want? Let’s make it simple.
Maybe you’re not sure exactly what you’re after. That’s okay.
Let’s talk about the types of shaved hair designs you can ask for. Then, I’ll let you know the best way to communicate that design to your barber.
Simple always works.
If it’s your first time with haircut line art, you might want to start subtle. A simple, clean design with sharp angles can add personality to your hair without causing too much of a stir.
Popular choices include lightning bolts, zigzags, and stars. Even a single dashed line, like a shaved part, can make your new cut pop.
Lettering and symbols are a solid option when done tastefully.
An experienced barber can craft precise, stylish lettering for shaved hair designs that are tasteful and striking. Initials are a popular choice, as are sports logos.
More complex patterns are also an option.
Spider webs, custom swirls, and even portraits are also possible. Get as abstract as you want, but make sure you work out your design with your barber first.
Here’s how to talk to your barber about your design.
Communication is key. To get the line design you want, we recommend you go with one of three options.
Option #1: Bring a picture or drawing.
If you have a photo of the design you want, bring it. If there isn’t one out there, you can draw it yourself. A drawing doesn’t have to be perfect; we just need enough to get the idea.
Option #2: Give a description.
If you don’t have a picture (maybe it’s a unique design and you’re not confident in your drawing skills), you can describe the style you want. You’ll want to be as clear as possible. In addition to the specific pattern or look, mention whether you want it to be bold or minimal, or use sharper lines versus softer ones.
Option #3: Let the barber decide.
This tack is for those of you with a barber you trust. If you aren’t exactly sure what you want, you can describe a general idea or the vibe you’re going for. Then, your barber will create a custom design that fits you.
Shaved hair designs are temporary.
On average, a design will last for five to ten days before the lines start to blur. How long exactly depends on the type of haircut you get, how often you get a new haircut, and the complexity of the design.
If you want to keep your shaved line art going for a while, you’ll need a touch-up every one to two weeks.
