I’ve been cutting hair for a long time, so I can say with confidence that the best back-to-school boy’s haircuts for 2024 should do three things:

So, now that we know fades are a good choice for this year, we need to talk about which fade. Well, here you go: These are the five back-to-school boys’ haircuts that I recommend for 2024.
1. The low fade is perfect for low-key kids.
This cut starts to taper just above the ears and gradually fades down in length toward the neckline. It’s a subtle, conservative transition that will give your kid a clean and easy-to-maintain look for their first day of school.
2. The high fade works for every kid.
The high fade is similar to the low fade, but the transition is instead above the temples in front and at the crown of the head in back.
The result is a bolder, more high-contrast cut that still offers a lot of versatility. Since you have a lot of hair at the top of the head, it can be side-parted or textured, or, really, whatever you want.
3. The pompadour fade is a bold look for confident kids.
As the name implies, this cut is a combination of the pompadour, with its high and swooping front and tapered sides and back.
True, the pompadour fade is not quite as easy to maintain as the other cuts on this list, but it offers a striking look for kids who are willing to put in a little extra effort.
4. The taper fade is smooth and easy.
Here’s one for the student who wants the smooth transition of a taper with the cleaner look of a fade.
The taper fade starts higher up on the sides than the similarly low-maintenance fade. It’s also flexible and stylish without being too dramatic.
5. The buzz fade keeps it simple.
Here’s how the buzz fade works: The top of the hair is short and uniform, and the sides and back are tapered to shorter lengths.
It’s simple and straightforward, and there’s no daily styling. The one drawback is that because the hair is so short, regular touch-ups are required. But still — low maintenance overall.
